Captain Clarke stays in top job
MICHAEL Clarke will captain Australia in this month's one-day series against Bangladesh while Ricky Ponting recovers from wrist surgery.
Australia named a 14-man squad yesterday with Mike Hussey to serve as Clarke's vice-captain in the three-game series in Darwin on August 30 and September 3 and 6.
Clarke, 27, led Australia for the final two one-dayers of the West Indies tour last month after Ponting's early departure. Clarke is unbeaten as captain, with Australia winning those games and two Twenty20 internationals.
"While it is disappointing not to have Ricky Ponting available we are confident continuing his recovery and missing this series will assure Ricky is ready for the demanding cricket schedule ahead for the Australian team," chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said yesterday.
"Matthew Hayden has been selected in this side subject to fitness. His progress has been monitored closely by our physiotherapist and doctor and his overall participation in the series will be determined as we get closer to the date."
Australian team physio Alex Kountouris said Ponting was making good progress.
"He is on track to be available for upcoming cricket," Kountouris said. "Matthew Hayden is progressing well with his rehabilitation following an Achilles tendon injury. His availability for the series will be determined over the next two weeks."
Australian coach Tim Nielsen said of Hayden: "We are very hopeful of Matthew Hayden being able to rejoin the team."
In Bridgetown, four players with no international experience have been named in the Stanford Superstars squad for the $US20 million ($23m) Twenty20 clash with England.
Fast bowlers Lionel Baker of Montserrat and Chad Hampson of Antigua, St Vincent wicketkeeper Lyndon James and Guyana all-rounder Lennox Cush were included in a 17-man squad announced by chief selector Viv Richards.
"There are several familiar faces in this Stanford Superstars squad, but there are some exciting new additions," Richards said. "There were some high quality performances from these individuals in the Stanford Twenty20 tournaments."
He noted the players also were "very impressive" in Antigua's preparation camp for 31 prospective Stanford Superstars. Seven of the 15 West Indian players chosen for their one-day series in Toronto next week were also included for the Superstars - Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Xavier Marshall, Dave Mohammed, Daren Powell, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Jerome Taylor.
Richards said the selection panel, which included Everton Weekes, Curtly Ambrose, Lance Gibbs, Richie Richardson, Andy Roberts and Courtney Walsh, believe the squad is "very capable of doing justice to their selection".
The November 1 match against England, the first of five annual matches planned, will be played in Antigua and was created and sponsored by Allen Stanford, a Texan who lives in Antigua. The match has been sanctioned by the West Indies and England and Wales cricket boards, but will not have official international status. Players from the winning team will pocket $US1 million ($1.15 million) each.
