Sydney performer Laura New has beaten thousands of hopefuls to become a member of an American girl group sponsored by fast food giant McDonald's.

The 22-year-old singer and dancer from Bangor, in the Sutherland Shire, has joined the "all-American" Beach Girlz, which was created by the team that works with major US stars including Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers.

"It's awesome. I love it. We got together about three months ago. We were put together through an audition process in Los Angeles," New said from her LA home.

"I'm the only Aussie … it's awesome. I love it."

Beach Girlz has a major sponsorship from McDonald's in the US even before their debut album launches later this year.

The lucrative advertising deal is part of a campaign that has involved the group performing in US cities as part of the American volleyball tour, performing songs including a cover version of the Beach Boys' Good Vibrations. They have also been singing a song called I'm Lovin' It.

"It's kind of inspired by McDonald's because they're one of our sponsors," New said, adding the band was a legitimate girl group in its own right.

"It's a bit of an advertising thing. Once we release [the album], we become our own entity as the Beach Girlz.

"At the moment we're still working on all our songs … we have a team of songwriters, but we're allowed to have some input. They're going to release us [on an album] hopefully at the end of this year."

New, who trained as a break-dancer in Sydney before heading overseas, said working for the Beach Girlz entailed more traditional moves, adding "there's no break-dancing, no".

She said moving to LA nine months ago to chase her dream was a great decision.

"I just took the chance because I wanted to perform for the rest of my life, not teach or anything like that," she said.
