Beechwood sale still up in the air
UP TO 1000 families and builders remain uncertain about the future of collapsed builder Beechwood Homes, despite the NSW Government raising hopes last month that a new owner would emerge.
Yesterday Shadow Minister for Fair Trading Catherine Cusack said the Iemma Government had been assuring the public since May that the company was about to be sold.
"Thus far the assurances have proven worthless and may have caused consumers to unwittingly forfeit their contractual rights to the receiver," Ms Cusack said.
"Eight weeks have passed since [Fair Trading Minister Linda Burney] first told consumers 'Don't panic' and the administrator would tell us about new builders 'in two to three weeks' time'."
Yesterday a spokeswoman for Ms Burney said the Commissioner for Fair Trading had spoken last Thursday with the receivers of the company. She said delays rested with the receiver. Asked whether the Government remained confident about a sale proceeding, the spokeswoman said: "There is no reason not to be."
Deloitte receiver Chris Campbell yesterday said the sale of Beechwood Homes would come "very soon I hope".
