Hooked on books as challenge ends
TERREY Hills Public School devoured close to 16,000 books as part of the Premier's Reading Challenge.
This year 237 of the 250 pupils at the Sydney school completed the challenge - many of them finished it several times over.
"It's wonderful," said teacher-librarian Sue Crawford.
Three sets of twins - Joshua and Jack McMillan, Sam and Jenny Holman and Natalie and Ben Norris, have all tackled the challenge.
The Rose sisters - Amy, in kindergarten, and Megan, in year 2 - completed the challenge 25 times between them this year, reading a total of 750 books, while Lachlan Dale, year 1, did it 24 times.
Mrs Crawford said each time a pupil completed the challenge, they received a certificate, their name in the school newsletter and a star for their class.
The class with the most stars was rewarded with a mufti day and sausage sizzle.
Pupils who completed the challenge four times received free morning tea and a canteen lunch. "One class has 95 stars," Mrs Crawford said. "That's 2850 books."
Parents, don't forget about the Premier's Reading Challenge Honour Roll, published by The Sun-Herald next month.
The Honour Roll will contain the name of every child who has completed the challenge this year.
Due to the record number of students taking part, the Honour Roll will again be published in two parts and it must be ordered through your child's school. Orders are now being taken, and parents are asked to contact their child's school to make sure they do not miss out.
The Premier's Reading Challenge is a NSW Government initiative, incorporating media partner The Sun-Herald, principal partner Dymocks Literacy Foundation and supporting partners Laubman & Pank and OPSM.
