Students meeting Premier's reading challenge
STUDENTS at one school are well-versed in their favourite books.
Several Goulburn West Public School students taking part in the Premier's Reading Challenge have also been having fortnightly Literacy Lovers' Luncheon meetings.
There, they talk about their Premier's Reading Challenge "good reads" and enter their reading record online.
Teachers also run book raffles, host visits from the children's librarian from the local public library, have staff members as guest speakers and have made "Star Reader" markers which are placed in books by students who recommend them. Students can also earn rewards - including a rubber bracelet which can have studs added to it as a further reward - for reading a certain number of books from the challenge.
Teacher-librarian, Leonie Todd, said that up to 40 children took part in the lunchtime meetings.
She said it was a great way to keep the students motivated about the challenge and that many more who started the challenge now completed it.
"We have raffles with book prizes and students read five books and they get a bracelet."
Don't forget the deadline for finishing the challenge, filling out the reading record online and having it validated by the school challenge co-ordinator is midnight tonight.
