Black box data from the Qantas plane that fell toward the Indian Ocean on Tuesday reveals the aircraft nosedived twice before returning to cruising level.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder from QF72 arrived in Canberra late on Wednesday night.

A preliminary review of the data showed that the plane climbed 200 feet from its crusing level of 37,000 feet, then pitched nose-down, plummetting 650 feet in 20 seconds.

The Airbus A330 then returned to cruising level.

But, investigators say it didn't stay there for long, nosediving again soon after - this time 400 feet in 16 seconds.

The saftey bureau now plans to distribute a survey to all passengers, and conduct interviews with injured passengers, to understand what occurred in the flight cabin.
