Day flies with three eagles in hunt for maiden tour win
VERONA, New York: Australian rookie Jason Day made a brilliant eagle on the final hole to set up a final day bid for his maiden US PGA Tour title.
The 20-year-old manhandled the longest - 624 yards (570m) - par five on the course to hit the green in two then holed out to ensure he goes into the final round just one stroke behind American leaders Tag Ridings (71) and Charles Howell III (69).
It was Day's third eagle in three days at the Turning Stone Resort Championship - following his hole-in-one the previous day.
And he shot 71 to be tied on seven-under 209 with overnight leader Jeff Overton (73), Englishman Brian Davis (69) and Kyle Thompson (69).
Fellow Australians Robert Allenby (71, 210) and Mark Hensby (72, 211) were also in the hunt.
Day needs a good finish as he sits 129th on the money list - four spots outside the top 125 who retain full playing rights in 2009 - with $US591,335 ($767,200) in earnings after a fairly tough year.
The youngster has managed two top 10 finishes, his best a tie for sixth at Pebble Beach in February, but has missed the cut 12 times.
On the women's tour, Paula Creamer's third-round 68 in the Samsung World Championship gave the American a one-stroke advantage on Saturday with Australian Katherine Hull in third place.
Creamer, who shot a 74 in windy conditions on Friday, birdied her final three holes to move to six-under 210.
She leads Angela Stanford, who is at five-under 211, by one shot. Stanford shot three-under 69 on Saturday at the Half Moon Bay Golf Links' Ocean Course in California.
Mexico's Lorena Ochoa was tied for third after a 70. The world No.1 was joined at four-under 212 by Hull, who had a 69, and South Korean Song-Hee Kim (70).
Ochoa wants to become the fourth player to win this event at least three times, following five-time winner Annika Sorenstam, who stumbled to a 75, falling to a five-over par 221.
Queensland's former world No.1 Karrie Webb carded a 73 to be two behind Sorenstam.
